Training on Monitoring School Improvement Efforts

No matter what school improvement effort is adopted, the fidelity of the implementation is key to getting results.  Bruce Hunter, AASA, after reading Hinckley’s book, Monitoring:  Keeping Your Finger on the Pulse of School Improvement, commented, “Your book was a great read and a reminder that it is hard work to change the behavior of well-educated adults who have experienced some success doing things differently.”  Training on monitoring includes these skill sets:

• Clarifying the non-negotiables of your school improvement effort that everyone must implement;
• Techniques of principal monitoring of staff, as well as staff monitoring one another, to ensure the fidelity of the implementation;
• Using formative data to monitor results, including regular data meetings with staff;
• Confronting non-compliant staff and modeling on how to have the “daily difficult conversations”;
• Maintaining momentum of the school improvement effort;
• Intentional role of the central office in monitoring building implementation over time.

Successful school improvement efforts are a result of a focus on a school improvement effort, consistent monitoring over time, and the realization that the commitment is over years, not months.
